WILKES-BARRE, PA (Friday, April 18) –
The Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA announced today it has named Jeremy Popiel Chief Operating Officer.

“My time at the Greater Pittston YMCA has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my career,” Popiel said. “Over the past three years, we’ve built something truly special—together. From growing community engagement to strengthening our programs and transforming our childcare services, every success has been a reflection of the passion, dedication, and teamwork that define this incredible branch and community.”

Popiel was named the Executive Director at the Greater Pittston YMCA on June 6, 2022. During his tenure in Pittston, Popiel increased donations during its annual Spin-a-thon from $6,793 in 2022, to $11,800 this Spring. He also increased annual giving to $40,000 and held the branch’s most successful annual award dinner in 2024, raising over $70,000 for childcare scholarships. Total memberships were at 908 units in 2022 compared to 1,310 units currently.

”I’m deeply grateful for the support and trust of our staff, the Pittston Advisory Board, and this vibrant community,” added Popiel. “The progress we’ve made wouldn’t have been possible without them. As I step into my new role as Chief Operating Officer, I carry with me the lessons and momentum we’ve built in Pittston. I’m excited to continue working alongside our teams to elevate our mission and impact the entire association.”

Popiel will move from his current office in Pittston to the Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA association headquarters at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. In his new role, he will oversee the operations of the association, which now governs three YMCAs (Wilkes-Barre, Pittston and Hazleton), YMCA Camp Kresge in White Haven and three child care facilities (YMCA Dr Charlotte L Casterline, MD, Early Learning Center, YMCA Mericle Family Center for Early Childhood Education and YMCA Child Care at Bear Creek) in Luzerne County. Popiel will continue under the direction of Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA CEO, Jim Thomas.

“Jeremy has done a great job with our Pittston Branch over the last three years,” Thomas said. “He has extensive YMCA experience between his time in Carbondale and our association. He has a great wealth of knowledge in aquatics, membership and wellness programs. Jeremy is a great team player. He will work wonderfully with our branch executives in continuing to expand our membership and programs.”

Popiel is a 2017 graduate of Keystone College with a Masters Degree in Sport and Recreation Management. He began a 10-year stint with the Carbondale YMCA in 2013 after earning his Bachelor’s Degree, also from Keystone College. During his time with the Carbondale YMCA, Popiel served as the Aquatic & Program Director. A native of New Jersey, he is now a resident of South Abington, along with his wife and two dogs.
